Oscar van de Voorde was de officiële architect van de wereldtentoonstelling te Gent in 1913; tijdgenoot en vriend van Albert van Huffel; hij realiseerde veel van zijn projecten in Gent en was ook een tijdlang als architect voor sociale woningbouw actief, getuige daarvan nog enkele tuinwijken in Gent; hij was ook geruime tijd lesgever en later directeur aan de Gentse Academie.

Oscar Romero, archevêque de San Salvador, assassiné en pleine messe le 24 mars 1980, marque aujourd’hui encore l'imaginaire collectif. Son engagement, dans le contexte d’une guerre civile marquée par les oppositions idéologiques de la Guerre froide et par la théologie de la libération est au centre de cet ouvrage. Oscar Romero incarne trois figures dans son parcours : héros, par sa "conversion" tardive et radicale vers des plus pauvres, prophète grâce à l’engagement de ses discours homilétiques et martyr par la force symbolique et la violence de sa mort. Son parcours constitue le point de départ d’une réflexion sur ces notions et leur signification dans le contexte latino-américain, tant politique que religieux, du 20e siècle. Dans le prolongement de cette réflexion, trois articles abordent le droit des autochtones et la formation des adultes, enjeux majeurs d’une société plus juste dans la pensée "romérienne". La réception en Belgique de quelques figures héroïques latino-américaines telles que José Martí, héros de l’indépendance cubaine (1853-1895), Camilo Torres Restrepo, le "prêtre guérillero mort au combat" (1929-1966), et les jésuites de l’Université centraméricaine (UCA) de San Salvador, assassinés le 16 novembre 1989, clôturent cet ouvrage.
